Recent Reads

Some recent reads I’ve enjoyed:

picture book:

Back to School Tortoise by Lucy M. George; illustrated by Merel Eyckerman

I love the illustrations in this very short picture book.  And the ending made all my kids–and me–laugh.

middle grade:

Cold Cereal by Adam Rex

An evil breakfast cereal company + Arthurian legend.  Need I say more?  The first in a new series by the zanily creative author of The True Meaning of Smekday.

young adult:

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I loved that Code Name Verity brought me into WWII history from an entirely new-to-me angle–that of British female aviators and spies.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

While I was reading Before I Fall, I loved it sometimes and really didn’t like it sometimes.  It takes place in a pretty harsh high school setting, and I have a hard time relating to such settings, since I didn’t go to high school.  But, ultimately, I really liked it.  The ending wasn’t what I wanted, but it felt like the right ending all the same.  Definitely worth reading, it could be described as a mash-up of Groundhog Day (the movie),  mean high school girls, and beautiful, evocative writing.

adult:

Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

This is my first foray into Terry Pratchett novels and I loved it!  It was hilarious and creative and bizarre and just all around awesome.  Many thanks to Cheryl, blogger at Tales of the Marvelous, for encouraging me to read it.

  1. Megan I love your blog! It makes me want to blog again. I have gotten into the awful habit of starting books and never finishing them. Recently I have started Bossypants by Tina Fey- Luisa got me into 30 Rock and I am loving Ms.Fey. I also recently started Getting the Love You Want- a book about Imago Therapy which basically proposes that we unconsciously marry someone that has the positive and negative traits of both or one of our parents and this sets us up for struggle in some ways, but there is a way to have a fulfilling relationship with our spouse. Unfortunately I finish self-help books even less often than I do regular books so we will see how it goes.
